How we got started writing
We have been writing business plans (sometimes considered works of fiction – or if you’re an investor – light comedy) for entrepreneurs since our company, Profit Dynamics Inc., got started in 1987. While we enjoyed the experience of working with our clients, we realized that we could assist more entrepreneurs by providing our knowledge and experiences in a book format.
We have been surveying and interviewing investors and venture capitalists every year since 1998 and decided in July, 2000 that we would organize the results of our surveys, expand the interviews and find a publisher.
What an experience! The very first and only publisher we contacted was John Wiley & Sons through their web site. Luck was on our side as the senior editor was anxious to publish a book on venture capital and he contacted us the very next day and asked for a formal proposal for our first book, Inside Secrets To Venture Capital.
We didn’t know what was included in a ‘book proposal’, but thought it couldn’t be much different than a business plan for a company, right? As it turns out book proposals and business plans have lots of similarities. So we sent off the book proposal at the end of the week, as our editor Mike, requested.
Two weeks later we received a contract from Wiley with the stipulation that the manuscript had to be completed by September 24, 2000. Yes that was only six weeks away. We finished the manuscript before we got the advance check from Wiley.
